If you find yourself in a position that you need to understand your target customer as well as keep up with various ways of marketing to those potential customers, Twitter is one of the most powerful and popular tools out there right now! This new type of network communication has been taken up by companies and individuals alike in recent months and for good reason.
To get a better understanding of Twitter, let’s first take a look at the format. Essentially, Twitter is a program that allows you to make very small, public posts. Because these posts are so limited (they max out at 140 characters) they can easily be sent to a number of different locations all at once. When you have written a Twitter, it can appear on the twitter website, on short message services, instant messaging sites or even on third-party applications like Facebook or Twitterific. Folks can even add a script to their blog or website to show their most recent posts and the posts of others! Your Twitter messages, also known tweets, will appear to anyone who has chosen to follow your updates.
There are several advantages to this type of communication. The first thing that you will discover is that it allows for a much more immediate relay of information. The shortness of the message forces you to be very brief, and this alone can create interest in those reading. Because tweets are so short, they often lead to frequent posting, which is excellent when you are looking to communicate with people and to get to know them. While Twitter is, by default, public, you can restrict the people who see your material with the ease of checking a box in your profile.
You will find that not only can you post tweets, you can also receive them. Once again, the immediate nature of this service lends greatly to its appeal. Want to follow someone’s updates and see what they are up to with their business or life in general? Simply sign into your Twitter account, type in their Twitter address or username and click the “Follow” button. That’s all there is to it.
The amount of time that spent reading the messages is very short, and you can be in contact with people a great deal more than you otherwise might be. In essence, you can get to know each other much more quickly than if you were just reading each others blogs or profiles. The look and feel of an instant messaging service helps add to this ability. Think about it for a minute, do you feel more connected to those on your messenger list than the blogs you read? Twitter is the same way.
For many, whether they are looking for friends, clients, or someone to help them out with a problem or workload, getting in touch with others is important. With Twitter it has never been easier!
Twitter is a Powerful Marketing Tool
Just a few short months ago, I had never heard of the word Twitter. I was reading at SSWT and a thread had been started for everyone to sign up for a twitter account and and to list their twitter address at that thread in the forum.
Signing up for an account was easy enough but not having a clue what to do, I mostly just read what the people I was following were saying.
That weekend Lynn Terry was going out of town to a conference and keep everyone posted on her happenings all weekend with Twitter. It was really fun and Lynn was using Twitter as an experiment. It has since turned into a very good way to market for her and she is definately “in the know.”
I started to search and read all I could find on Twitter as it became more popular. Following are some great tips and information to help you decide if Twitter is for you.
It does not matter if you are just getting started with an online business or whether you have been around for a while and looking for a new way to network, Twitter just might be what you have been searching for!
-
It’s Short, Sweet & To the Point
Have you ever heard the phrase, less is more? You’ll find that one of the best things about Twitter is that it keeps all messages very short and sweet. You’ll have to give your customers and clients the gist of what is going on in short tweets (messages similar to instant messages) that allow their interest level to rise in such a way as to make them investigate further. You won’t bother them with long-winded messages that make them yawn and move on. Instead, you will be able to catch their attention quickly and make them want to know more.
-
Immediate
Much like a blog or an RSS feed, you can get access to the people that use Twitter regularly. In some ways, this is like making sure that you can reach them no matter where they are, and you will find that this is very important when you want to make marketing one of your biggest priorities. You are making sure that they have all of the latest updates to what you are doing and what’s going on by simply sending a tweet their way.
-
Everyone’s Doing It
- You Get to Hear a Lot
Remember that it goes both ways; you can put information out on Twitter and you can also learn a lot too. By following other’s Twitter accounts, especially if it looks like they have a lot to offer, you can keep in the know about various products, services, and other happenings online. This can be a great way to keep an eye on what is going on in order to keep yourself in the know of your industry.
- Make Them Laugh
You can also use Twitter to tease people a little bit, in a fun way, of course! When you use Twitter, you have to keep your messages short, and in many ways, a little mysterious. Catch their interest, joke around, and you’ll find that you gain a lot more followers and hopefully website traffic and customers as a result.
Be warned, just as with any other social networking site, Twitter can quickly become addicting if you let it. Don’t go overboard and get so involved in all the tweeting that it takes away from your intended purpose. Used wisely Twitter can be a great and powerful marketing tool to help create online business success.

I am back from Willie Crawford and Frank Garon’s Internet Marketing Momentum Bootcamp
What a great weekend it has been for me! My first internet marketing seminar and with some great people! I have met Willie Crawford before at an informal gathering he had in Fort Walton Beach a couple of months ago and this was my first time meeting Frank Garon. They delivered on what they promised and I have all I need to make this a success!
Everyone I met was so nice and I left there feeling like I had a new family. I will cherish this experience forever! The meetings were great and the after hours hanging out after dinner was yet another chance to learn even more. This was also a weekend of laughter and fun. I cherish that as much as the learning. I will be posting some pictures from the seminar weekend soon.
Things To Think About Before Starting An Online Business
How much time do I need? How much will it cost? These are common questions when thinking of starting an online business. A lot of people are struggling and looking for a way to supplement their income, which is the reason for wanting to start an online business. An online business can be started for a very small amount, for even under $100.00.
As far as time, the more time the better. Some of us are employed full time, trying to spend time with family, running the typical household things, and wonder how we can find extra time. I have found that even if it is only 60-90 minutes per day after work is a good start. Using this time to really focus and get something done is very important. I have even heard the idea of setting a timer can help. It makes it feel like you are under a little pressure and some of us work better that way. If not, knowing that the timer will be going off may help us to focus on getting a task completed.
Do you have the techinal know how? This has been one of my biggest blocks. I can use a computer and the internet. I have learned a lot of the language but there is still more learning to do! I am willing to learn and it feels like major accomplishment when I complete a task that a few short months ago, I would have never dreamed I could do.
There are people out in the online world that are willing to help us along the way. Eric is one of these people and here is the link to the next lesson! Eric’s Lesson #3
Can anyone start their own business?
This is the topic of Eric’s lesson #2. Eric makes some very good points about what an online business actually is.
There are several questions that come to mind about starting an online business. How much will it cost to get started? How much time is necessary to make an online business successful? How much computer experience do I need? Will I be able to quit my job?
An online business is not a job. If you build your business the right way, you can have more security and income that a lot of 9-5 jobs. This is what I want and following Eric’s Tips is going to be a big help!
Listen here for Eric’s Lesson #2
Let’s follow Eric’s Tips to start an online business together
I have been a long time subscriber to Eric Holmlund’s newletter called Eric’s Tips. This has been one of the newsletters that has been helpful to me.
Recently Eric announced that he was going to be leaving the internet marketing business. He is offering anyone signed up for his newsletter, to receive 120 video lessons that he is creating for free on how to build an online business from A-Z. He decided to do this after doing a survey with his readers and found that so many people are suffering from information overload. There are a lot of people(myself included) that have all this great information but are unable to put it all together to actually get their business going.
In one of the comments on his blog, the question was ask if it was ok to put a link to the video on their site. He said yes, so I thought that was a great idea and I am going to include the link to the first lesson in this blog post. For anyone wanting to get started and learn from someone that is very successful, this is a great opportunity. Eric’s Lesson #1
I am very excited about this step by step series that he is doing, and hope you will find it helpful too!
The newest thing for me is Twitter :)
One of my favorite places to visit online for everything to do with internet marketing is Lynn Terry’s SSWT. She has been working totally online for about 12 years and has a remarkable way of sharing her knowledge with members of her forum.
Lynn set out a few days ago on her blog beginning a test with Twitter thinking this may just be something to get sucked into to waste time(something I can’t seem to find enough of). It did not take her very long to decide that Twitter is a valuable marketing tool.
If you have not set up a Twitter account, go and sign up now! It is really very quick and simple to do. Once you have your account, you can start “tweeting” right away. You decide who you want to follow, and will find that you will soon have followers yourself. This social marketing tool is a great way to connect with people with the same interest, as well as a great way to get some traffic to your website or blog. Now, head on over, set up your account, and if you need that first one to follow, you can find me at http://www.twitter.com/jeanmandel :)
